NEW(ish) THINGS

(VAD's LOGApril 14, 2006) Ambrose (that's him getting out of his egg) reports that The Underdogs (source of many old DOS abandoned games) are back up and running. The new URL is Underdogs - The Gaming Depot (it seems that they've merged with The Gaming Depot, formerly a games database site). Not all of the games are there yet, but they're working at it. Ambrose is nagging me to get all of my Underdogs links updated, but I haven't done it yet (nothing worse than a mouthy hatchling). More news coming soon... Oh, and in case you want to adopt your own dragon hatchling (or take mine off my hands, sigh), you can do it here Silverphoenix's Adopt a Dragon.

:GAMES - CLASSIC AND MODERN

  • Here are two sites for getting information about classic games.
    • Classic Gaming. Mainly information about games on platforms other than PC, like Atari, Sega, Nintendo, etc. Good site

      • Aldrien's Chalice. Tutorials for using the Morrowind Construction Set. Also has patches and mod-building utilities. Useful site for mod-builders.

      • Destination Morrowind. Having trouble finding an out-of-the-way location in Morrowind? (Where the *@#$ is the Vassir-Didanat Cave?) This site has written directions to many Morrowind locales (ongoing progress, keep checking back). Very useful site.
      • Gamespot - Desslock's Guide to the Elder Scrolls III Morrowind. Excellent, comprehensive, GET IT! Has on online version (free) and a downloadable paying members only .pdf version. I simply took the time to download all 100+ pages of the online version (it's that good!)
      • Rhedd's Heads. Sick of playing an ugly character that looks like the hair was stuck on as an afterthought? Get Rhedd's heads! A must-have mod!
      • Morrowind Interactive Map can be found at either FilePlanet or uesp.net. A lovely little program that helps you locate places in Morrowind. This is an out-of-game-program, you can zoom in on the program's main map to check the surrounding terrain and locales so you know what to landmarks to look for when you're hoofing it across the continent. It also allows you to make notes on each location and to mark the locations as visited, unvisited, etc. The uesp.net site listed second above also has a version you can use on-line. A must-have
      • Morrowind Summit. News, faqs, and a fabulous collection of mods. Here's the link to their Mods database. Excellent site.

    • QUAKE LINKS (page coming soon)

    • So who hasn't played Quake?  And you don't really need me to tell you what to do -- kill everything that moves, grab all the secrets, and find the level exit -- so these links deal with resources for building mods in Quake.
    • TOMB RAIDER LINKS
      • Stella's Tomb Raider Site. Has detailed walkthroughs, strategy, screenshots and maps for ALL the Tomb Raider games, also has a collection of savegames just in case you can't make it through those darned timed gates. Everything you need, excellent, excellent site.

      • Mysterious Sosaria. Check out the Bard's Library link for the Ultima games music (midi)! Then visit Josef Drexler's home page. He has an extractor for the Ultima 9 music (250MG of .wav files) and sheet music for "Stones". Great site (now I have 4 versions of "Stones").
      • Origin Ultima IX. This is the old Origin website for Ultima IX, now "not" maintained by Electronic Arts (listed here only for old times sake). Has some music tracks (like "Stones"), patches, Quicktime walkthroughs and interviews with Richard Garriott (aka Lord British). You can reach the site but good luck trying to download anything from the ftp site. Annoying lack of good will on EA's part.
      • RGCU FAQ. Mainly Ultima game background and technical issues FAQ, includes where to find patches, technical help, etc. A must-have.
